La Sierra Norte

Oaxaca

Although not a lot of people know it, Oaxaca, located in the southwest of Mexico, has some of the best natural singletrack trails in the world, and is quickly turning into one of mountain biking best kept secrets. In this 7 days, we will ride an ancient singletrack trail network throughout some of the different regions of Oaxaca’s Sierra Norte, where we will stay at bike friendly traditional adobe cabins in the middle of the thick Sierra forest, complete with a fireplace, roomy bathroom, a shower with hot water, and a porch with hand sewed hammocks. These places are run by local autonomous indigenous communities and are an amazing experience by themselves.

We’ll ride a wide variety of ancient trails; some of them are full of natural jumps, berms and flow, some are steep and loose, some have a ton of tight, steep switchbacks and a lot of them have everything just mentioned. We’ll throw some fun and games on and off the bike to the mix, more party trains than a subway station, AMAZING local organic food, and all the cold cervezas you can handle!  We’ve planned 14 amazing, mostly shuttled rides for you, with more than 26 thousand feet of raw, combined descending, along 150 km of ancient singletrack (if your’e feeling like it).

For this trip, your english speaking, trail ripping guides, will help you out on and off the bike with everything you need, starting from the airport, where they will pick you up and make sure you don’t have to worry about anything but having a good time. No fake touristy towns here, you’re up to a real, authentic experience; home to famous mezcal and mole, Oaxaca is one of the most culturally rich and diverse places in the world.

Riding time! We move up to the mountains and get installed in our cabbins, right in the middle of Sierra Norte's deep forest, in order to ride, ride & ride, ending the day at your cabin with a hot cup of local delicious chocolate, a hot shower and a large (or x-large, its all inclusive!) traditional, organic meal for dinner. A bonfire and a million stars to end the day the best way.

We're starting very early in the morning (if you're feeling like it) for an amazing sunrise exprience. We'll shuttle you almost all the way to the top of one of Sierra Norte's hundreds of mountains to experience the birth of a new day with delicious hot chocolate to go with, and with the first morning light, you'll ride back down to the cabbins where breakfast will be waiting. Later on you'll ride some of the best trails of the trip, including two monster trails: 7 km long, 1000+ meters of vertical descent each!

On the fourth day of the trip we'll start it off easy with some shuttle laps on the local trails surrounding our cabbins just to get ready for the main course (pun definitely intended): "Mil Ríos" (spanish for thousand rivers): an ancient zapotec trail that goes all the way down from the mountain tops to Oaxaca's Central Valley crossing a river several times, hence the name. After this AMAZING trail, we'll shuttle you all the way back up to our cabbins, not without visiting a local Mezcal factoy on our way.

For the last riding day of the trip, we are shuttling you to yet another region of beautiful Sierra Norte. Home to several enduro races, this trails are some of the best you'll ever ride; long (really long) natural singletrack trails that flow beautifully fast on the top and descend their way down like a river, getting tech as they go down. Some will say that we've left the best for the last, as we shuttle you to your hotel for the next couple nights in downtown Oaxaca, where your bags we'll be already wating at your rooms. Party Time!

No more bikes, and we're sure you'll be fine with it. Today we are having breakfast at Oaxaca's Central Market, where you can do some authentic local shopping after a delicious meal, and then we'll stroll up to beautiful Santo Domingo square and cathedral (pictured on the left), where you can have some delicious street treats like "elotes y esquites". After some well deserved beers, fruit cocktails or margaritas, we'll shuttle you up to Monte Alban ruins, an ancient zapotec city which is now an UNESCO World Heritage place and back to your hotel afterwards, where you'll chill and get ready for a delicious goodbye dinner reserved at one of the amazing restaurants Oaxaca has to offer. Our staff will spend the day packing up your bikes (if not otherwise requested) so you can party one more time if you're feeling like it.
